South of Margarita is this arid island that rises 60 meters above sea level. Fishing activity predominates as the main livelihood and its salt mines produce a large amount of salt, considered one of the best. In the early sixteenth century it was inhabited by settlers who exploited the rich pearl beds of the salt flats. It offers very different landscapes: on the one hand the beaches, the coasts and the cliffs; but also an interior that still preserves its essence. Its scenery contrasts with each other when you arrive on the island from Margarita. On the island of Coche you can enjoy a wide variety of hotels that have respected the natural balance of the island. Discover fascinating beaches such as La Punta, ideal for those who practice water sports. Other highlights include Playa el Coco, which offers spectacular views from the terracotta-colored hills, and Playa el Amor with a stupendous view from the cliff. 💡Curiosities: Coche suffered the same 1541 tidal wave that destroyed Cubagua, but was not so severely damaged. On April 25, 1815, the ship San Pedro de Alcántara, which had brought the Spanish field marshal Don Pablo Morillo at the head of 15,000 men to quell the insurrection in Venezuela, sank suddenly in these waters, and is still there, at the bottom of the sea. Besides being an island full of history, it is one of the tourist spots least altered by man.
